Since the founding of Rush Philanthropic Arts Foundation (RPAF), Rush has impacted the lives of over 700,000 urban youth, directed millions in funding from donors (including individuals, foundations, and leading corporations) to underserved youth, and established two exhibit and education facilities, Corridor Gallery in Brooklyn's Clinton Hill neighborhood and Rush Arts Gallery in Manhattan's Chelsea arts district. Initially, to jump-start the Rush Arts Gallery and Community Grants programs the Foundation hosted its first gala benefit at the Puck building in Manhattan, with Run-DMC providing headlining entertainment. Soon after RPAF created its signature event - the Art For Life benefit and auction hosted at Rush's Co-Founder Russell Simmons' East Hampton estate. To date, The Rush Community Grants Program annually provides direct funding to over 70 nonprofit organizations that offer education programming in all disciplines of the arts to New York City and South Florida youth. The Rush Kids Program has evolved into an intensive year-round arts education program that hones the students' art making skills, bringing youth from across New York City into our gallery spaces, where they discuss contemporary art, learn about materials, and create artwork. Art concepts and cognitive skills are developed progressively throughout the program while exploring works from artists exhibited in the gallery. Rush Philanthropic has been fortunate to have the advantage of the media power of our founders Russell, Danny and Joseph "Rev. Run" Simmons. This has given the organization an exceptional platform from which to highlight the lack of access to the arts that most disadvantaged New York City children face, and speak out on the challenges facing underrepresented artists. He is known for his use of shaped canvases and experimental techniques, such as his use of push broom brushstrokes. Ed Clark was born in 1926 in the Storyville section of New Orleans. In 1952 he studied abroad at L'Academie de la Grande Chaumiere in Paris, France - where, by 1953, he began exhibiting his abstract paintings. He became engrossed in creating large-scale paintings, reaching as high as twelve feet and as wide as fifteen feet. Having little success finding paint brushes large enough to accommodate these large canvases he discovered a new use for the push broom which he calls, "the big sweep". During this time in Paris in 1956, Clark created what is now known as the "first shaped canvas" which is a part of the permanent collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. The artist resides in New York City and returns to Paris to paint every summer. His work is represented by G.R. His life and art are marked by exceptional talent, encompassing a broad range of intellectual and scholarly interests, including music, performing arts, history, literature and world art. Bearden was also a celebrated humanist, as demonstrated by his lifelong support of young, emerging artists. Recognized as one of the most creative and original visual artists of the twentieth century, Romare Bearden had a prolific and distinguished career. He experimented with many different mediums and artistic styles, but is best known for his richly textured collages, two of which appeared on the covers of Fortune and Time magazines, in 1968. An innovative artist with diverse interests, Bearden also designed costumes and sets for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, and programs, sets and designs for Nanette Bearden's Contemporary Dance Theatre. Bearden's work is included in many important public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and The Studio Museum in Harlem, among others.
